Popular Votes Photoshows: February 2021

I do apologise that I have not been on top of making sure there are updates about our ongoing shows in here. I promise to do better in future!

For those who don't know what Popular Votes Photoshows is, it is a Facebook group that has been running since 2015. We run a different show each month. Each show is judged by group members, who like each others photos in a set window of time. The horses with the most likes win their class and go into a championship! Champions get a rosette sent to them and get to be the cover photo for the next month.

BreyerFest Fun Week 2020

It feels slightly strange writing this as it shouldn't be happening this year. But instead here I am writing it and trying to make it bigger and better than ever! I think we all need cheering up and Chestnut Ridge is here to MAKE YOU HAPPY. So be happy. No choice. Forced fun.

Please note - this is nothing to do with the official BreyerFest and is not endorsed by them in anyway. It's just a bit of fun run by the UK model horse community each year.

OK so normally we just do a few competitions and giveaways and things, but this year I've decided to make it bigger and better! So as well as competitions and giveaways we have some weird and wonderful other things for you to get involved in.

All live events will be run the Monday-Thursday so that they do not clash with any official BreyerFest events.

Daily Giveaways

We will be running daily giveaways on our Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/chestnutridgemodelhorses/

Each day all you will have to do is comment for your chance to win the item. There will be a total of seven items to give away!

Daily Trivia/Competitions

On our Facebook page we will be running daily trivia/competitions. This is basically what we normally do. We normally ask people to do things like guess the amounts produced of certain models or the surprise model so I haven't concluded what we'll do this year but I'll think of something!

https://www.facebook.com/chestnutridgemodels/

There will be prizes available.

Model Horse 'Pub Quiz'

Please note changes.

The Pub Quiz will be held on Zoom and there will be no prizes offered. I have toyed with how I can make this work, I want to make it fun and interactive but also fair.

This is why I have changed it to a Zoom call. This will allow everyone to take part and actually interact with each other! It will make it more fun :)

To help prevent cheating or upset there will be NO PRIZES! So cheating will just make people angry at you and you will gain nothing from it. Also bare in mind you are on camera!

Grand Photoshow

The Grand Photoshow is up and running and ends on July 12th. There are some awesome prizes and rosettes and it is completely free to enter.

'Surprise' Models

Throughout the week of BreyerFest we will have 10 'surprise' Traditional scale models available on the website.

They will be priced at £35.00 each and will be wrapped up so even I won't know what you are getting!

We are going to put one extra special model in there but I haven't finalised what this will be yet so keep watching to find out :D

Auction Night

During our Auction Night you will have the chance to purchase 25 items as part of 99p start auctions. These will include a mixture of OFs, CMs, ARs, CTFs and Tack as well as some bundles or more unusual items.

20% of the money raised will be donated to The Bail Project: https://bailproject.org/

NB: A few items will be 100% charity listings will all the money raised being donated to the Bail Project. If you would like to donate an item as part of this please let me know.

Market Night

Our Market Night will be run on another evening. This is your chance to get your paws on a selection of really cool items! They will be first come first serve.

There will be fifty items available as part of our Market Night sale.

Again this will be a mixture of items.

Zoom Social

Our Zoom Social will be open to all model horse hobbyists over 18 years of age. Come together, have a chat, share some painting tips or just talk about whatever it is you guys talk about at live shows.

Over 18s only for a reason. People never behave.

Introduction to the Hobby Seminar

This is an extra special seminar for BreyerFest Fun Week. This seminar will go through all the different elements of the model horse hobby, explain to you some key terms and tell you how you can get involved. It's designed for newcommers but will be suitable for all.

It will be held via Facebook live like our other seminars: https://www.facebook.com/chestnutridgemodels/

Treasure Hunt

Throughout the week you can take part in our treasure hunt. Collect clues, put them together and come to the right conclusion for your chance to win an extra special prize!

Fun Week Bingo

We will be running our usual 'bingo'. Photograph an item to match each of the squares, upload to Facebook or Instagram and you could win a pretty awesome prize!

Chestnut Ridge Grand Photoshow 2020

As part of our BreyerFest fun this year we are running our Grand Photoshow again! This huge photoshow is completely free to enter and comes with some awesome prizes :)

The show is open to anyone, regardless of location and you can enter in lots of different ways. The easiest way to enter is to upload your photos into the relevant albums on the Facebook group but you can also enter via Instagram, Email or Post. This means that literally anyone can enter, you don't even need a computer!

For full details of how to enter please see the website here:

https://www.chestnutridge.co.uk/grand-photoshow.html

There are no individual class entry limits on this show but there is a maximum of 50 entries. The nice thing is that this suits all types of showers, if you have a really specialist collection you can still do the same number of entries as someone who has a more diverse collection. But with well over 100 classes you'll have to think carefully about who to enter!

What Kind of Photos Can I Enter?

Someone asked me this on Instagram and the real answer is any. But your photos need to be clear and show off your model. You can use a light tent or similar or you can set up a realistic background shot like the one below. But is the one below clear? Do you think the model really pops? These are some good things to think about when you are taking your pictures.

If you use props etc. make sure they are in scale with your model and don't distract. Scale is particularly important when it comes to performance entries.

What Will I Win?

There will be printable certificates for placings and champions.

Section & supreme champions will also get rosettes made by the amazing Inspirations Rosettes

Anyone who gets a rosette will also get a Mini Whinnie Surprise Bag.

I have also been completely taken aback by people randomly offering to donate prizes! So there are also going to be some really awesome prizes available :)

How Long Have I Got?

You will have until the 12th of July to enter! So please get on and enter as soon as possible. I don't want people forgetting!

Who Will be Judging?

I will be judging the whole show. Because I am a masochist.

I look forward to seeing everyone's entries, and remember the most important part is to HAVE FUN!

April's Photoshow is OPEN!

I hope you are all enjoying being inside, or being outside and risking the life of yourself, your family and all those you love so that you can serve your community (YOU ARE AWESOME PEOPLE).

Well if you are stuck inside may I recommend you pop outside to your garden and get some pics of your Traditional scale models because this month's photoshow is all about Traditionals!

It is open to all makes and models, the only requirement is that it must be approximately Traditional (around 1:9) scale. So this would include Breyers, Stones, Customs, Resins and anything else you happen to have that's about the right size.

To enter you first need to be part of the Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1493893527541574/

Once you've been accepted please read the rules document and comment underneath that you understand:

Then you just need to upload your pictures into each album. Click on 'photos' and then 'albums' and then select the album you want. Each class has its own album.

You can enter up to 6 photos per class. Once you are done just sit back and wait for voting to start.

GOOD LUCK!

Congratulations to March's Champion!

March's theme for Popular Votes Photoshows was 'Schleich'.

I'm not entirely sure what it says about the Schleich horses that the winner of the entire show was a rabbit, but it is a very very cute rabbit and a lovely photo so we'll leave it at that!

A very well done to Abbie and her adorable rabbit FTF Patches, your rosette will be with you at some undisclosed future time when all this has blown over and I can leave my house once more.

Seriously though how cute is this rabbit? It has a little house!!!

The theme for April's show is 'Traditional' which will include all makes and models as long as they are approximately Traditional (vaguely 1:9) scale. If you don't already take part in Popular Votes Photoshows then you can join the Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1493893527541574/

Popular Votes Photoshows IS BACK!

I am not going to start this Blog post with a load of excuses and reasons why I had no time to run the shows at the end of 2019 but instead I am going to focus on the awesome good news which is that it is BACK!

For those who don't know, Popular Votes Photoshows is a model horse photoshow series that is held on Facebook. Instead of me (or someone else) judging the photographs they are judged by the members of the group. Members vote using 'likes' and the horse with the most likes in each class goes into the championship.

The champion is then voted for, the best horse is featured here and also put as our cover photo for the month. And new for this year they will also get a ROSETTE! Yep that's right, I've ordered 12 custom rosettes for you to proudly display if you win :D

If you want to take part then head along to the Facebook group here:

www.facebook.com/groups/1493893527541574/

Each show has a different theme, the themes for 2020 are:

January - Artist China
February - North America
March - Schleich
April - Traditional
May - English Performance
June - Light Horses
July - Thoroughbred
August - Dun
September - Special Runs
October - Plastic CTF
November - CollectA
December - Classic

This month's show is for any artist china model, we have decided to include Horsing Around and Animal Artistry chinas in this as well as custom glazed chinas.

So what are you waiting for? Go and get those entries in!

And finally a massive congratulations to August's champion (and yes it has been that long) owned by CG:

I am pleased to announce that April's model horse photoshow is now OPEN!

This month the theme is 'resin and china'. The show is open to any model horse or equine that is made of resin or china. This includes commercial resins and chinas as well as artist resins and chinas.

There are 24 classes including a breed, performance and fun section. You can enter up to 6 models per class so there is plenty of potential to win!

To take part in the show please visit the Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1493893527541574/

Finally a massive congratulations to BFS Sally Delighted owned by Jennifer Tomey who was March's champion (the theme for March was 'other animal'). I personally love this shot and am so glad that others voted for it as well! It will make a great cover shot for the following month.

There are 25 classes including some performance classes, a great chance to get those chunky monkeys out and show them off! Hopefully you got a few nice pics if you got snow last week!

If you would like to enter please take a look at the Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1493893527541574/

15 Thoughts From a Show Host

I've been running live shows now for 8 years and photo shows for much longer. So here are 15 thoughts from a show host about shows, hosting and life in general.

1. Drop Outs

When I ran my first live show back in 2010 nobody dropped out. At all. The same was true the next few years, but then a few years ago something weird started happening. Suddenly waiting lists became essentially, people started to drop like flies. Now it isn't uncommon for a sold out show to not have a full hall on show day because of so many last minute drop outs.

This became so bad last year that this year I implemented a no refunds policy. Not that it has helped...what it does mean is that at least the charity is getting some extra money when someone drops out!

I honestly don't understand it. I've dropped out of shows, this Summer I dropped out of everything and I have never felt more guilty. I just cannot understand why it is so common place now. Well actually that's a lie, I do have a theory. Shows book up so quickly now I think there are people who are 'booking first, planning later'. You'd be amazed how many people book onto shows without even reading the schedule, checking they have transportation or even that there are classes for the models they own! Plan first, if that means you miss out on an initial space and have to join the waiting list then so be it, you'll probably get a space when someone drops out anyway....

2. Entry Fees

When I attended my first live show the entry fee was £15.00. Twelve years later the entry fees are still £15.00. Which makes me wonder, how much have costs gone up? Looking at my own accounts they have gone up a lot. Is it time that standard entry fees started going up and as entrants we expect this to happen?

3. Questions, Questions, Questions

No matter how many FAQ posts, detailed class descriptions or other ways you try to answer every single possible question in advance of a show you will guaranteed still be asked a myriad of questions. Usually the same ones. That you answered. On the schedule.

My highlight has to be "Where do you want British Spotted Ponies?" To which I responded "In the class titled British Spotted Ponies". Yep, they hadn't even bothered to read the schedule.

Pro tip for entrants, read the schedule first, ask the questions second! It's quicker for you and stops a stressed twitchy show holder from sending a rather curt reply!

4. Schedule Numbers

This is probably my autism showing through but seriously if you are running a show number your schedules properly.

I am so guilty of this, where it has reset and not continued numbering, but I've been to shows where it has just been all over the place and it confuses everyone!

5. Starting with Arabians

This is not just me I promise! But honestly there is nothing more confusing than a show that doesn't start with Arabians. Unless you don't have an Arabian class you should always start with Arabians, it just puts me all off centre if you don't (seriously this isn't just the autism I had this conversation with about four other people at BMECS who all agreed they can't stand it)!

P.S. I ran a show this year that didn't start with Arabians. Do as I say not as I do :p

6. Milk & Sugar

If you are running a show there are four things you should never forget to buy: Coffee, Tea, Milk and Sugar.

7. Glossy Certificates

You can't write on glossy certificates. They look pretty but they are annoying. Please use matte.

8. Don't stop moving!

How many miles do  you think a show holder walks on show day? As a show host I rarely sit down. I run BIG shows, 150 classes, six sections. If I sit down then the show stops. I keep people moving with good reason, it gets us all home at a decent time. Which brings me onto....

9. The Crash

If you've run a show properly you should feel like death the day after. It's stressful, it's painful. You put your heart, soul and money into making it an amazing day for everyone.

So as an entrant, always say thank you, always remind the show holder how awesome they are the day after. They've worked so hard to prepare that event for you. Honestly some of the stuff show holders do is just insane (crocheted figures for all the entrants anyone?)

10. Spreading...

I am so guilty of this! But I'm not as bad as some people.

When you attend a show you get one table. Bring a number of models that will fit on that table. Seriously don't block walk ways with your boxes. Show rooms are often quite tight for space and that isn't helped by boxes everyone.

11. Read the Rules People!

This goes for all types of shows. Honestly you haven't run a show if you haven't had at least 20 questions that the person could easily have found the answer to if they had just read the schedule/rules.

12. Hiding Information

That said, show hosts, don't hide the important information! I hate schedules where I have to click CTRL + F just to find out how many entries I can put in a class, or where it is, or how much it is or anything else that is quite important.

Think about how it reads, if you aren't sure get someone to test read it for you.

13. Check Your Postcodes

Hall websites are a nightmare for not putting the right postcodes on them. Check that the hall's postcode is correct (you can use the Royal Mail postcode finder) and also test whether your sat nav will take you there. Adding directions, a map and a correct postcode on your schedule will make things a million time easier for your show attendees.

14. Offer Help

Running a show is hard work, it is stressful and a show host cannot do everything alone. So offer help when you can, whether it is helping with judging (see point 15), helping set up tables or clear them up, washing up or even just bring a yummy cake for everyone to eat. These little things make a big difference to the show hosts day.

15. Send In Your Judging Lists!!!! ON TIME!

OK so I am guilty of this, I know I am, and I can't stand a show holder who wants a judging list 3 months before a show (as a show host avoid this because by the time the show comes along people will have around 50 new models each. Guaranteed.) but seriously people. If someone has given you a deadline of Wednesday before the show get them in by Wednesday before the show. Judging lists take time to do, they take time to alter when people decide they are bringing completely different models and they take time to print. We all have jobs, we all have real lives, we are all fitting this around our other commitments and all we ask is that when we say "We need your judging lists by X" you bother to get your lists in by "X". Please.

Having Fun with Outdoor Photography

So I promised I would start Blogging on a more regular basis and what better way to start off than a talk about outdoor photography.

We've had such dry weather this summer it has been almost perfect for model horse photography! If we ignore the often very bright sunshine.

So here is a little trip through some outdoor pictures and some tips on how you can get good lighting, good footing and generally have fun with your model horses outdoors!

Snow

OK so I know that I was initially talking about the Summer weather but I just love taking pictures in the snow so much! Snow makes for lovely light and a really great footing. The other good thing is you can use surfaces you wouldn't normally use such as tables and walls because the snow creates a realistic footing.

OK so here we have an example snow picture. Here you can see one of the biggest problems with snow photography and that is where the snow is too deep. I do quite like this shot because it looks like the horse is having fun playing in the snow but the long grass and deep snow makes it look out of scale and covers a large part of the horse - a big no no with model horse photography.

This is a much nicer example of an outdoor photograph. Here none of the hooves or legs are hidden by the snow as it has been crushed down where the horse is. You can see the grass is also much further away which means the horse looks in scale. The light is also really nice, there is a little reflection on the quarters - this is something you need to watch out for with slightly shiny models and snow pictures where there can often be a lot of light reflection.

Outdoor Backdrops

You don't just have to take outdoor shots using the natural environment. You can create mini scenes outside as well and use backdrops.

Here is a nice example of a really simple set up. A scenic mat, a backdrop and some lichen. I like the light in this shot, the foal is really clear and shown off. Unfortunately there is quite a lot of reflection on the backdrop though and also some shadowing which takes away from the realism of the photograph.

Here is an example of how outdoor pictures can sometimes cause you a few problems with lighting! Here we can see heavy shadowing from some form of plant that makes the picture quite atmospheric but doesn't lead to a great photoshow picture, particularly where there is shadowing on the background.

This is another example of a really simple set up. There is a painted backdrop and footing. This could be better but is a nice example of how you don't need anything fancy to get a decent shot!

General Outdoor Pics

Outdoor photography can often mean great light and a natural backdrop without much effort! But there are a few things to look out for, like long grass and...WIND! Gosh I hate wind so much...

Here we can see some lovely lighting but deep grass covering up the horse's hooves a bit too much. That said the light shows off his beautiful red colouration so well.

I love this picture. The background isn't massively realistic but the light and the colours just work so well. The light is perfectly hitting the horse and showing off his gorgeous shading. The grass at the front could have done with a bit of a trim.

Very deep grass does not a good picture make. Take a look at this picture of Ruffian in really deep grass and the picture below of Feoh on a area of ground which is more earth. Which do you prefer? The one below is clearly much nicer.

This shot of Feoh has lovely light and a nice base. It's just such a pity I didn't take the time to trim the grass and plants in the foreground as they are blurring her legs! If only those weren't there this would be a nice example of a good outdoor shot.

Long grass isn't the only issue with outdoor pictures. The background is really important. It's important to make sure the things in the background are realistic and in scale. Clearly our old house was not...

Have you taken some cool outdoor shots over the Summer? Why not share them on the Chestnut Ridge Facebook page? I would love to see them :D
