Patriot

The third model I missed blogging about!

A new release from Breyer, limited to just 3,000 pieces. I've enquired as to whether he will be available for Chestnut Ridge to get in. He is on MPV so guessing not a US exclusive.

I hope he is because he is rather cool looking! I would love one for my Clock Horse conga line.

Furano

Another model I missed out on Blogging about whilst in my Brandy related sulk.

This is one of the BreyerFest special run models.

Furano

Not sure if I like the colour or not. They've done that annoying leg barring thing again!

Pele

I've been really bad at posting recently, so sorry, Brandy is ill and my brain is in mega panic mode. (she is in mega sulk mode).

Anyway check out the Diorama prize for this year's BreyerFest. IT'S SO SHINY!

I'm odd, I quite like the Buckshot mould. Please feel free to through them at me :p

Getting Ready for OMG Orange OF Live

Why do these shows always creep up on me?

But I think I'm getting there! I've spent this evening pricing items, so just some baking and shopping left to do...o and I need to find the fun class prizes which appear to have vanished...

Check out the goody bags! I want to add oranges to them as well :p

Entrant packs are also all packed, BMECS cards organised, certificates cut, rosettes checked, everything filed and packed away.

Should be a great (if not stressful day)

Now to watch the football, do some more pricing and plan what we are going to bake!

Understanding Model Railway Scales

This comes up a lot so I thought I'd do a brief explanation of model railway scales, what they mean, and what scale they actually are!

First of all...scales...

What do they mean?

A scale is usually represented as a ratio e.g. 1:9 scale.

The left hand number represents 'real life' the right hand number represents 'model life'.

So basically what this means is that for one real horse, you would have nine model horses.

This means that the larger the number on the right the smaller the model.

So say you had a horse that was 162cm high (for the curious this is around 16hh).

The 1:9 scale model would be 18cm high.

The 1:12 scale model would be 13.5cm high

The 1:24 scale model would be 6.75cm high

The 1:32 scale model would be 5.0625cm high

The 1:64 scale model would be 2.53125cm high

So as you can see the larger the number on the right, the smaller the model horse.

So what about model railway scales?

Well these are the common scales:

G - 1:22
O - 1:43-1:48
OO - 1:76
HO - 1:84
N - 1:148 - 1:160

As you can see the scales aren't always consistent, they vary between different countries and manufacturers, sometimes quite considerably! Which can be quite problematic!

So how do our model horses fit in with this?

Well the most common small scale is Mini Whinnie which is 1:64 scale and therefore falls somewhere between O-OO.

Below shows a mini whinnie with an OO scale item:

And another:

As you can see Dog Food looks a little large!

But do not fret, you can often use your imagination and a bit of creativity to utilise items to fit in with 'our' scales. For example you can use trees such as the one shown as topiary in show jumping courses, or build up the hedges to double height for a more realistic finish.

As with all things model horse, it is all about creativity!

Cutey of the Day

Check out this adorable little cutey:

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/30/5e/f4/305ef497b991706f88f34815bbfc3692.jpg

Isn't he just to die for?

Decided he was just going to have to be a reference picture. So hopefully a little mini whinnie should be this colour some time soon...

Although first I have a million and one layers of white to do on this guy:

To quote my husband "he's not finished"...

Health and Live Shows - Why our bodies destroy what we love...

Urgh my knees...

It is a phrase we all say so often, our backs our knackered, our knees are knackered and that three hour drive? Well that nearly killed us.

For some it is old age, for some chronic (or not chronic) health problems that slowly eat away at what we love.

When I had to give up riding horses it nearly destroyed me. But when I reached the point where I was in so much pain I would be crying on a horse, where the muscle weakness in my hands meant some days I couldn't hold the reins, I knew I had little choice.

I hardly expected that just a few years later those same problems would be destroying my ability to even show model horses.

But it is a horrible fact that many of us end up living with and do so almost silently.

For me live shows have become almost like torture. A few years ago, I'd get home, unpack the car, clean out the pigs, make dinner and watch TV.

Now I come home and go straight to bed. I will then sleep for around 24 hours+ if I can, before having around 2 days of non-activity. The pain and exhaustion is just unbearable. When I finish a days showing, I can barely stand, I often have to take very strong pain killers when home just to make life bearable.

But I'm not the only one. So why do we do it?

Well because we love it. We love the shows, the people, the fun days out. Of course we all have to manage it. For me it means making sure I have someone with me to help driving and not doing long distances. It means trying to make myself slow down a bit (not good at this) or having shows where I don't judge because I know it could mean I'm unable to drive home.

So keep showing my little potatoes...and don't worry if you need a time out :) We all love you and we all understand x

Meet Nina

I'm pretty sure I forgot to share little Nina with you guys!

Nina was bought at auction along with her mum (who is in need of TLC) and a Beswick Shire (who is up for sale on Chestnut Ridge).

She was the main reason I wanted the lot, isn't she just a cutey?

Her full name is CRS Nina Flowers
