Personalised Goody Bags Anyone?

Would it really be a show run by me if I didn't go completely extra on the goody bags? Obviously not! This year even by my own standards I have gone a bit extra, that title is correct, this year I have made personalised goody bags for each entrant!

I've used these adorable small tote bags that are the perfect size for a goody bag. I've then used a very simple iron on vinyl for each bag (I know I know the waste THE WASTE, but it was the easiest option). Each bag has a little horse heart design with the entrant's name underneath.

I was so happy with how they turned out. I picked the colours completely at random so I hope people are happy with their colours! I was going to do glitter vinyl but I didn't have enough left to do all the bags and I didn't want some people to have some and others not. Also I desperately need to restick my Cricut mats, thankfully we didn't have any slippage today!

The bags will all be stuffed full of amazing items. We are still waiting on three items to arrive which is why I can't do a full reveal of the contents yet, but don't worry when they arrive I definitely will! They are going to be A-MA-ZING. Trust me.

And the best part? I have enough items to make two more goody bags which means if you book last minute (like now) I can still put you together a bag! Although please don't leave it super last minute as it does take time to get the Cricut out and make the bags!

If you are tempted to get a last minute ticket you can buy them here: https://chestnutridge.co.uk/collections/show-tickets

Putting Together a Live Show List

I thought it would be really fun to share with you guys how I put together a show list for a model horse show.

The show I'm preparing for here is Mrs. P's CTF Show 2025. This is a specialist CTF show and has a slightly different class layout than your general show. You can see there a specialist classes for models such as WIA/CollectA or Schleich/Safari.

I haven't filmed the whole process as putting together a full show list takes a good few hours to do! But you get a good insight into how I decide which models I am going to take to a live show. It's also fun to see all the ridiculous names that I've given my models over the years!

Make sure to check in for a full show report from the show in a couple of weeks :)

Celebration of Breyer Live 2025 - Supreme Trophies!

I am so excited about these trophies! I wanted to do something really different this year, I looked through lots of different options and in the end settled for these unusual acrylic block trophies. I normally go for glass or your standard plastic gold trophies so these were definitely something different.

Unfortunately I did mess up a bit as I typed the wrong number and chose the wrong colour for the Supreme Champion trophy! I wanted the blue and gold colour which matched the blue and yellow theming for the rest of the show, but I don't think I ruined it, the gold is very nice.

The Supreme Champion trophy is the largest and then the two reserve trophies are the same size. They are made from transparent acrylic which means to photograph them well they do need to be on a plain black drop (hence the blanket)! I chose a trophy symbol as the two horse ones both had broken legs (although I could have done the Chestnut Ridge logo but decided against it).

Do you like them? Prefer them over glass/plastic normal ones we do? I'd love to know your opinions!

If you want to order similar ones for your show they are from cookiesandkoalas on eBay.

Wild Boar Live Awards

We've had a couple of parcels over the last few days containing the first of the awards for Wild Board Live.

First up we have the trophies. The big ones are for the Supreme Championship and the smaller ones are for each of the section champions

I much prefer glass trophies than the plastic ones, I think they look nicer and more expensive, even if they aren't actually that expensive! I had hoped to get ones with pigs on but that wasn't really possible, clearly pig showing needs to become more of a thing!

Now we have the certificates. These have been externally printed but I will need to put them through the Cricut to cut, that is going to take a LONG TIME, *sarcastic enthusiasm*

They are going to be so cute when they are cut out!

Wild Boar Live Certificates

Yesterday I designed and sent the certificates for Wild Boar Live for printing.

As I have a Cricut I decided that it would be brilliant if I could have pig shaped certificates! I mean if I can get a machine to cut everything out then why not?

I will print the Supreme and Section Champions myself but I have sent the Division Champion and Placings off to an external printer. That will save my poor printer from having a complete meltdown and also mean they are actually decent quality!

For the ones I'm printing myself I am going to back them onto coloured card (similar to the ones from Herefordshire Live) so they will be nice and solid and also look adorable.

Let's have a look at the placings :D

Each placing features a cute little pig with a coloured rosette and the placing on their bum. They don't have the show name on so they can easily be reused for future shows.

Next we have the division champions, these ones feature a cute little flying pig

I have done them in different colours for each placing. I love the Champion one, he is definitely my favourite

Now we have the section champions. I tried printing these yesterday and realised the printer was not a happy potato! But it has now had a "Stronger Clean" and seems to be printing OK!

These are a simple design but they will be quite large and backed onto a cool coloured card. I may also just add some glitter, you know, just for bants

Finally we have the Supremes Champions

I'm not really sure why I added butterflies but they do look kinda cute and it makes them look a bit different. Again they will be backed on a nice card to give them a solid and sparkly finish. I may also add GEMS FOR EYES, mainly to annoy people :D

I hope you like them all! I know they are all pigs rather than boars but there isn't a huge amount of wild boar based content out there, so we have gone with their domestic cousin instead.

The placings are definitely my favourite, they are just TOO CUTE

Wild Boar Live Updates

 Hello everyone :D

Today I'm giving you a little update on Wild Boar Live and how we are getting on with getting everything sorted. I am being super organised (I know weird) and have actually been reasonably on top of getting things done! Which is very impressive for me.

Spaces

There are currently four full and three half spaces left. If you would like a space or need more information about the show please email competitions@chestnutridge.co.uk

You can also find out more about the show here: https://www.chestnutridge.co.uk/wild-boar-live-2023.html#/

Trophies

I have ordered trophies for the Supreme Champions and the section champions as well. As usual I went for glass trophies because I think they are just prettier.

Here is a sneak peak of one of the trophies:

Rosettes

Rosettes have also been ordered. They are, as usual, being made by the brilliant Liz who always makes me such gorgeous rosettes. I can confirm that they will also feature a pig in the middle!

There will be rosettes for Supremes, Sections and Division Champions.

There are also extra rosettes for the winners of the fun classes.

BMECS Application

BMECS Application has been submitted. There is a question about whether we make the show a 23/24/25 qualifier or a 24/25/26 qualifier. If you have an opinion on this then please share it in the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/herefordshirelive

Today I am going to get the certificates designed and ordered, thankfully I now have a Cricut so I won't be giving myself blisters cutting out pigs!

The Easiest Way to Record Show Results

Hello everyone :D In October at Recycled Live V we tried a little experiment for show results and I wanted to write a little bit about it to share what we did and how it worked.

Anyone who has ever run a live show will know that one of the most tedious tasks after the show is writing up results. Several years ago I decided I would try and make things easier for me by using a laptop but because some showers completely refused to use it this actually made my job harder as I basically had to write up all of their results afterwards! It can take hours to type everything up and attempt to read handwriting and also understand what people are going on about and quite frankly post-Covid show host me is completely done with that.

So for Recycled Live V I decided to try and do something different. I wanted a simple and easy way that would mean show holders are responsible for their own show results and not me.

My solution was a pretty basic and simple one, a Google sheet.

So what did I do?

Well I typed up my usual results sheet into Google Sheets. I had my classes arranged by ring with space for 1st and 2nd place in the columns.

I then shared an editable link to the show group before the show and explained to people how I was going to do it. That meant everyone had access to it.

On the show day I had a laptop which was connected to a hotspot run off my phone which anyone could use.

After the show I simply picked a deadline and told people to ensure everything was correct by then.

People seemed to respond really well, nobody complained about having to do it and once everyone understood what they were doing it worked really well. Many people chose to write them up on the day on the laptop but some people chose to do them after the show and others used their own devices.

For me it saved so much time and stress. I just needed to ensure my own results were correct. When I submitted it to BMECS I closed it for editing and sent them a link, I also downloaded a copy and sent one of these across as well just in case something went wrong!

Above shows how the sheet was set up. You can see it is arranged by ring with the class number, name and section as well as space to write in 1st and 2nd place.

Were there any issues?

As with anything there were a few issues.

Firstly, I forgot to make the link editable at first, but that was a quick fix

Secondly, I had to refresh my hotspot occasionally which took time and was another thing to think about on the day. Obviously a hall with WiFi would be helpful here.

Thirdly, there were some issues with results being in the wrong place and needing to be moved. But once everyone had sorted this afterwards it was fine. It just meant people who thought they had done their results did need to double check them as there was some weird stuff floating around in odd columns and some went missing? (I suspect they were accidentally deleted but that's OK).

There were still some gaps but TBF there were not too many BMECS relevant ones!

Would I do it again?

Definitely! The only real limiting factor is phone reception/WiFi in the hall. Obviously if I don't have this I cannot do it and that can be a real issue for some halls. So it isn't suitable for everyone but it's definitely so much easier than me having to type everything up. Several people also liked that they could just do it in the evening and not on show day as it relieved stress at the show.

How do I start?

If you want to do it all you need to do is this:

1. Make sure you have a Google account (if you have Gmail then you have one)

2. Create your results sheet in Google Sheets

3. Share the editable link with your show entrants

4. On the day ensure you have a device (preferably a laptop) with access to the internet set up in a corner for people to type into

5. Set a deadline for results to be in

6. Remind people a week before the deadline to just double check nothing has changed

7. Lock for editing and then submit the link & downloaded copy to your qualification body

Anyone can do this, you just need a free Google account and access to the internet!

Show String Rankings: How To

When you've been showing for years it often becomes hard to identify which are your best and worst models. Sometimes you probably feel like you take the same models to every show and although you feel like they are your best they aren't actually doing as well as you would like.

So today I'm going to share with you a quick and easy way to rank your horses and get a good picture of who is still succeeding and who is falling short. All you will need is MS Excel (or similar) and a bit of time and patience.

Scoring System

The first step is to create your own scoring system. You will need to allocate a number of points to each of the different awards your models can win. How many points you award is up to you but it needs to be consistent.

My points system is below:

Overall Champion = 100
Overall Reserve Champion = 85
Overall Reserve To Reserve Champion = 70

Section Champion = 50
Section Reserve Champion = 40
Section Reserve to Reserve Champion = 30

Top 10 = 25

Champion = 20
Reserve Champion = 15
Reserve To Reserve Champion = 10

Best of Breed/Group Winner = 8

1st Place = 6
2nd Place = 5
3rd Place = 4
4th Place = 3
5th Place = 2
6th Place = 1

I also double my points for BMECS/NAN placings.

Now you have a scoring system in place you are ready to start your spreadsheet and start ranking.

Setting Up Your Spreadsheet

Set up a spreadsheet with columns as follows:

1. Horse's Name
2. Points
3. Show's Attended
4. Average

To work out the average points you will need to enter the following formula into D2

Now you can go about populating your spreadsheet. This is going to be extremely time consuming if you have been showing for years and just starting out so maybe try to aim for a year a week or something similar!

Start by recording the total points for every horses in Column B

Next go back over your show lists and record the total numbers of shows each horse has attended in Column C

Important Note: Even if a horse has zero points if they have attended a show you will still need to make a note of this.

You should notice that column D automatically populates with the average points.

You should end up with something like this:

I have applied filters to make organising easier! You can do this under the 'Data' tab.

Sorting Your Horses

You can now sort your horses by two main methods either their total points or their average points. To illustrate the difference between the two look at the list of my top OF horses. The first is sorted by total points:

And the second is sorted by average points:

You will see the two lists are very different. One of the reasons you want to use average points over total points to see your top horses is that if you have a model that you have been showing for years (like Bushka for example) they will have a LOT of points and it will be hard for newer models (like Sultan for example) to make their way onto the list. Look at how many shows Bushka has attended compared to Sultan! Using average points therefore allows you to ensure that new horses that are doing well fit into your show string and old horses that maybe did well in the past but haven't placed in years drop out.

Final Tips

The final thing I would say is try to split by finish, that way you know your best horses for each finish:

I have also started linking these into my Massive Horse Spreadsheet. This means that I can sort by things such as make, scale and breed to tell you who my best OF Arabian or best CM Thoroughbred is. This is really helpful when it comes to specialist shows.

Recycled Live V

 Hello everyone :)

It's been a few weeks now but I have finally got a few minutes to sit down and right a show report for Recycled Live V. It felt so weird to be back running a show again but I'm so happy that it went relatively smoothly and I didn't forget anything (well apart from the milk).

The day started early as we headed off down to the show hall. After some confusion about an email that I definitely didn't receive regarding the location of the key we managed to get hold of it and let ourselves into the hall. My biggest anxiety was that since Covid the hall would have lost tables/chairs. It appears that it definitely lost chairs but there were enough tables to cover us with only one of our own ones needing to be used (which was positive)! I set everything up whilst Brendon unpacked the van and inevitably realised that I had, once again, forgotten the milk. That was after a lot of stress the night before attempting to stop at a shop to get said milk!

Once everything was set up and I'd had a moment to breathe, doors were opened and people started to arrive. My biggest tip to show hosts is to be strict about when doors open. If you say they open at 8.30, don't let people in until 8.30! You are entitled to get everything set up and spend time having a bit of piece and quiet before you start the show.

Once everyone was in and settled we got going with the first sections. We started off with performance, workmanship and original finish. As this is a specialist British breeds show the performance section was for various forms of English performance. The workmanship isn't limited by breed but instead it has to be a British artist. OF is of course for British & Irish breeds only.

As always the standard was really high, workmanship was incredibly competitive and a real showcase of how amazing the artists in our country are. The standard of performance was also really high and there were some beautiful entries. The OF classes were packed, with lots of gorgeous commercial resins.

We then moved on to the CM and CTF sections, which are the other two large sections. Again these were really competitive and filled with gorgeous entries.

We were making great time so we were able to break for a longer lunch than normal. After lunch we had a HUGE raffle! I'm amazed to say that we raised nearly £170 for Trust for Oxfordshire's Environment. There were so many awesome prizes and I was super happy to come home with a beautiful new Magpie to add to my collection :D

Afterwards we finished off OF and then moved onto the ARC section which was the last section of the day. Again the standard was super high and it was so nice to see so many entries that were also painted by UK artists, including their owners.

The day finished with the Supreme Championship. There had been some gorgeous trophies and rosettes donated along with some lovely prizes. The championship was extremely competitive and the Supreme was very well deserved, the owner was so happy she cried! Amazing to see a horse painted by its owner taking Supreme :D
