My 20 Best CTF Models

 Hello all :)

Over the last few weeks I have been sharing some of my best models in my collection. Today we have my 20 best CTF models. I don't actually distinguish between plastic and bendy CTF for the purposes of my records (although weirdly I do on my breed list spreadsheet) so today they will be all together.

There is a real variety of brands here although there is a clear focus on my RubberNedz, which is probably not unsurprising! I do have a few others in here as well though including a few unexpected pieces.

This is a great testament to the idea that you do not need millions to get successful horses. This includes some models that have cost just a few pounds, including one that was a child hood toy and came with a magazine! Yes some are super expensive, but lots of these guys weren't.

How do you turn a mini whinnie into a necklace?

Mini whinnie necklaces are one of the most fun things you can make with your model horses. Not only are they a creative way to use your minis but they also look gorgeous as well.

Turning a mini whinnie into a necklace is a relatively simple process, here is a quick step by step guide so that you can have a go.

Supplies Needed

🐴 Mini Whinnie Model Horse
🐴 Wire
🐴 Necklace Chain

Advanced option:

🐴 Sheep Eye Nail
🐴 Dremel with small drill bit
🐴 Glue

We are going to go through two methods in order to create your necklace. Either method works well, although the advanced option gives you a nicer finish.

Basic Method

The first thing you will need to do is ensure your mini whinnie is clear and, if you want, paint your model to a new colour.

We are going to be using this little mini whinnie here

Now get your necklace change and your wire. Feed your wire through the centre of the chain and wind it around itself.

Alternative option: If you want the horse to be loose on the chain add a small jump ring onto the chain and wrap your wire around this instead.

Cover the wrapping by adding a little bead, I've gone for this cute wooden one

Now get the ends of your wire and wrap them around your model. Secure them by using pliers to tie them in a knot under the model.

You now have a cute little model horse necklace!

Advanced Option

For the advanced option you will need either a dremel or a small hand drill. Use this to make a hole in the withers of your model.

Now fill this hole with superglue and insert a sheep eye nail into the hole. Leave it there to set.

Now you can add a jump ring through the sheep eye and feed your necklace chain through it.

This same method can be used to create all kinds of jewellery and ornaments, including earrings! Enjoy :D

New Customs

Look I fixed my camera! Go me :D I have a few new customs to share with you today, all finished over the last few weeks. They include some sales pieces as well as another finished resin to add to my collection.

First up we have CRS Werewolf Feud

Feud is a Maggie Bennett Brightside resin

She has been painted to a lovely bloody shoulder grey. I am really in love with this model, her colour is just to die for!

Her less bloody side :D

Next up we have a little Breyer Mini Whinnie Gypsy Vanner. This little cutey has been painted to a cremello. Isn't he the squishiest?

And finally we have a CollectA Belgium Mare. I have been working on this one for over seven months! We don't need to talk about how much white went on her. I used Stuart Semple's White (the experiment strains) to create the white markings. They are nice and liquidy which makes them great for painting whites and after like 7 million coats you do end up with seriously bright white markings!

If you like the last two they are both for sale here: https://www.chestnutridge.co.uk/store/c3/custom-finish#/

Feud isn't for sale though, she is staying with me forever. And ever. And ever. And ever. And ever. And ever. And you get the picture :D

Four New Customs

First of all I must apologise for the poor photography, I'm not properly set up yet (the whole model horse situation is just chaos and disaster right now) so I can't take decent pictures! I'm trying to persuade the husband to actually sort out the pony room so I can get some decent pictures soon!

The one advantage of the NaMoPaiMo parties has been that I've actually been able to get on with some customs. All of these models were started last June which gives you a bit of an idea as to how behind I actually am with them! I quite like the black but I'm not over the moon with the rest. They are all for sale though and finishing them off means that I can focus on some new models, many of which I'm much happier with so far!

First up is a little mini whinnie foal. She's been painted to chestnut.

For some reason I got the light right for that photo but the rest are awful!

Secondly we have a G3 Peruvian Paso to liver chestnut tobiano. This model was originally a plain liver chestnut but had to have a colour change after I spilt white paint on him. As you do. Anyway he's now tobiano!

Third we have a black G4 Driving. This model has lots of shading that you can't really see due to the darkness of the photos. Once I get set up properly I'll redo these glamour shots!

And finally the unicorn. This is an odd one as it changes colour depending on how hot or cold it is. But it seems a bit stuck at sorta blacky/grey rather than the nice purple! Very much a "I will experiment with random things" model this one may suit some tastes, but not others. I'm sure there is someone out there who will love her!

If you have fallen in love with any of these guys they are all for sale on our website here: https://www.chestnutridge.co.uk/store/c3/custom-finish#/

I'm currently working on the last few that were started last year and a few new ones including a gorgeous bloody shoulder resin and my NaMoPaiMo horse of course!

Sooooo Moody......

All the way back in February I impulse bought some thermodynamic paint from the USA and put it to use creating this:

No photo description available.

I was absolutely in love with my creation, as were others, and I had promised to make more. However, life got in the way and I didn't really get round to it.

So a couple of weeks ago I decided that enough is enough and the people need Mini Whinnie mood necklaces! So I started work.

These items are not easy or quick to make, they require a lot of time and patience as every layer takes forever to dry.

You start with a mini whinnie, then you need to add a hook for the necklace. I do this using FIRE because fire is fun (don't use fire people seriously I'm not a safe human). I heat up the hook and then push it into the plastic, this melts the plastic and forms a bond. Great but dangerous.

Then you need to properly prep and prime your mini as you would for any other type of painting.

Then you have to paint it black. The paint needs a black base to properly work. I just use airbrushed acrylics and do a couple of coats for a good matte black finish.

Now for the paint. This is in liquid form and can be airbrushed on. It takes about five coats with a drying time of several hours, so I did this over a few days and did three at the same time.

Once that is fully dry you can very carefully paint the details. I hold the models by the tail for the airbrushing so I can cover all over, which means the tail will need painting afterwards. So I use metallic paint on the mane tail, hooves and eyes.

Once that is all dry you need to seal it all in resin. I use a two part resin that takes FOREVER to dry but it is the one recommended by the paint's manufacturers and I think it's best to stick with what you're told to do somethings! I put string through the hooks, apply the resin and then hang them on the clothes airer to dry. For four days. At least.

Now horsey number two and three are still not dry, which is a bit worrying because horsey one is. I'm not sure why but I'm going to do a bit of heat curing later to try and speed up the process!

Then I just add the chain using a jump ring and I am done! One mini whinnie mood necklace:

Me and my camera have had an argument hence the blur, I don't know what is going on with it at the moment. It hates me. I hate it. Feelings mutual.

Without any heat they just appear black, here you can see the sort of bronze colour that you'll get in winter or when you are wearing lots of clothes. The blue above is what you will get in heat.

Of course you need to know your mood! So I made these handy mood guides (when I say made I Googled it, printed it and laminated it)

No photo description available.

Pretty sure they are the same ones as my local New Age shop has pinned on the counter!

If you like her she will be listed for sale on the website tomorrow under 'gifts'.

Painting, Painting, Painting

My hands are now pretty much always covered in paint and I had a massive fight with my airbrush (we are just about on talking terms again, it has promised to behave as long as I maybe use it a little less) but I am making really good progress with these customs. I am now working on a rate of painting one a day! That's quite impressive when you think one a month was an achievement before lockdown.

Even the custom category on the website actually has products in it for once! That is quite unusual: https://www.chestnutridge.co.uk/store/c3/custom-finish#/

So here are the new guys :D

Come Undone

First up is 'Come Undone' a Breyer Stablemate G2 Shetland that has been painted to a light bay. He has a little white star and a single white sock.

Commander

Second is 'Commander'. Commander is a Safari Mini (Toob) Shire that has also been painted to a light bay.

Communitarianism

This is one of my favourites of the bunch. He is a Peter Stone Chips Friesian that has been painted to a star dapple grey. A really dramatic looking model.

Communication Breakdown

This is the first of the new Mini Whinnie unicorns to be painted. This little guy had his horn removed before being painted to a dark bay with a white star.

CRS Calcareous Earth

Alchemy is a gorgeous Maggie Bennett micro resin 'Aquilla' who has been painted to a light dapple grey. This one is joining my ever growing herd of tiny resin things! He doesn't seem too pleased about it though...
